TBILISI BRAZILIAN FILM FESTIVAL 2019

Our history

The Tbilisi Brazilian Film Festival comes in 2019 to its 6th edition. Presented by the Brazilian Embassy in Tbilisi, the festival has been able to display in Georgia, since 2012, more than 40 top-quality Brazilian films, mostly recent and previously locally unscreened productions, and has been growing in size and attendance since its beginning.

2019 Edition

OCTOBER 25-31

This year's edition will be as big as the 2018 - the biggest edition to date. For the second time TBFF will comprise seven nights, with six long feature films, and one evening dedicated to also recent short Brazilian animation films. As usual, entrance will be free, all films will be presented in original language (Portuguese) with English subtitles, and tickets will be awarded on a first-come-first-serve basis, starting 30 minutes before each session.

MOVIES - ALL AT 7PM

FRIDAY (25) - NISE: THE HEART OF MADNESS (2015)

Biography/Drama/History (1h46min). Directed by Roberto Berliner. With Gloria Pires, Luciana Fregolente and Simone Mazzer.

Based on the true story of Dr. Nise da Silveira, a psychiatrist in Brazil who treated her patients with art instead of electroshock therapy.

"Nise: The Heart of Madness" won as Best Film in the Tokyo International Film Festival and as Best Film in the Rio Film Festival Audience Award.

SATURDAY (26) - BINGO: THE KING OF THE MORNINGS (2017)

Biography/Comedy/Drama (1h53min). Directed by Daniel Rezende. With Vladimir Brichta, Leandra Leal and Ana Lúcia Torre.

An actor becomes an anonymous celebrity when he plays a television host clown.

 

"Bingo: The King of the Mornings" won as Best Film in the Grand Prize of Brazilian Cinema and was the Brazilian entry for the 2018 Academy Awards.

SUNDAY (27) - VAZANTE (2017)

Adventure/Drama. (1h56min). Directed by Daniela Thomas. With Adriano Carvalho, Luana Nastas and Sandra Corveloni.

Brazil, 1821. A rich cattle herder finds out that his wife dies in labor. Forced to live in the property with numerous African slaves, he marries his wife's niece. But he returns to droving, leaving his wife behind alone with the slaves.

TUESDAY (29) - JUST LIKE OUR PARENTS (2017)

Drama (1h42min). Directed by Laís Bodanzky. With Maria Ribeiro, Clarice Abujamra and Paulo Vilhena.

When Rosa's mother makes a surprising disclosure to her one day, Rosa decides to break out of her usual obligations. In so doing she discovers that life holds many surprises in store for her.

"Just Like Our Parents" received the awards of Best Director and Best Actress at the Grand Prize of the Brazilian Cinema.

WEDNESDAY (30) - CAIXA DOIS - MONEY ON THE SIDE (2007)

Comedy (1h30min). Directed by Bruno Barreto. With Giovanna Antonelli, Cássio Gabus Mendes, Fúlvio Stepanini.

Fishy businessman deposits some money in his secretary's (and lover) account. But a typing mistake sends the money to an honest woman's account, whose husband had just been fired.

THURSDAY (31) - THE BALLROOM (2007)

Drama/Musical/Romance (1h35min). Directed by Laís Bodanzky. With Leonardo Villar, Tônia Carreiro and Cássia Kis.

In an old-time dance hall (the "gafieira") in São Paulo, one evening is all it takes to meet different characters as they remember the past, live the present, wonder about the future, have fun, flirt, fight and, naturally, dance.

"The Ballroom" won awards in the Geneva International Film Festival, the Brasília Film Festival, the Miami Film Festival and the Grand Prize of Brazilian Cinema.
